The Mitropa Cup, officially called the La Coupe de l'Europe Centrale was the competition between Central European clubs and Southern European clubs and they were known as the best clubs in the World, was first held in 1927 and it had been sustained their standard until 1939 due to interruption by World War II and then European Cup was replaced as the highest level competition in Europe.

The Latin Cup was an international football tournament for club sides of the league champions from Latin European nations of France, Italy, Spain and Portugal, was held in 1949 to 1957. It was a knock-out system competition. Immediately prior to the introduction of the European Cup, the Latin Cup was considered the most important cup for clubs in Europe

European Cup was created in 1955 and it is the competition between the only champion of the league as a knock-out home-away system  and it was changed the format to be the tournament system call UEFA Champion League in 1992 before  allowed for the top two in the top league in Europe to participate in 1997. It was increased to four teams in 2000.

Inter-Cities Fair Cup was created in 1955 and known as the runner-up cup. However, the first three years was competed just for one champion and England sent London XI to participate. The cup was first standardized in 1960, played as a knock-out home-away system until 1971, it was changed name to be UEFA Cup and play in the same format. Since 1997, UEFA Cup was influenced by European Cup to reduce its level of standard. It was changed to tournament system in 2009, known as UEFA Europa League.

UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup was a former knock-out system cup and was participated by Cup champions. It was competed between 1960 and 1999 before merge to UEFA Cup to increase its standard in 1999.

Fußball-Club Gelsenkirchen-Schalke 04 is the greatest German club in the pre-war era, base in North Rhine-Westphalia. The club was founded in 1904 as Westfalia Schalke by a group of high school students, was re-established as an independent club in 1919. They won their first Western German championship in 1929 and eventually won four titles. Schalke played in the Gauliga Westfalen under the Third Reich era and dominated German football until the war-time with seven German Champions and they is the only club to win double champions before era of Bundesliga, built the record unbeaten in the home game for six seasons. The club was one of the members in the first season of Bundesliga. The club met their trouble era in 80s, relegated to second tier for 3 times before back to win their only European title in the 1997 UEFA Cup. Schalke was the leading club in Germany during the 2000s, finish runner-ups 4 times as their second best era. Olympique de Marseille is the greatest French club of all-time, is the only club from France to win European Cup, holds the record most French Cup winners and placed the first in Ligue 1 all-time table. The club was founded by René Dufaure de Montmirail, a French sport official in 1892 before football department was formed in 1899. In the 1920s, OM won the Coupe de France 3 times and won their only amateur French championship. Hence, Marseille became the only top French club in history to ever win amateur league title. The club won its first French professional league in 1937. Marseille relegated for the first time in 1959 and played in the Second Division almost every season in the first half 1960s. Marseille could win two double champions in their history in 1972 and 1989. Dinamo Zagreb was found in 1945 in order to replace the three very popular Zagreb football clubs which were disbanded by the Yugoslav Communist Party following the end of WWII and Gradjanski HSK Zagreb is regarded as its major predecessor. Soon, Dinamo’s glory years was appeared during the late 1940s to the 1950s. Sevilla Fútbol Club is an all-time greatest club from Seville City, is the famous Spanish club in the recent era after they built the victory as one of the two clubs in history to win UEFA Cup for two consecutive seasons in which happened between 2005 to 2007. In 1905, the Civil Governor of Seville officially announced the creation of Sevilla FC. Panathinaikos is one of the most ancient Greece clubs. They are just the second greatest club in Greek league. Ujpest is one of the oldest clubs in Eastern Europe. The club was founded by school teacher János Goll in Újpest under the name Újpesti Torna Egylet. “The Lions” Athletic Bilbao is a Basque football club. Football was introduced to Bilbao by two distinct groups of players, both with British connections. Sparta Prague is the most successful club in history of Czechoslovakian football and continuously sustains their greatness in Czech Republic league. At the close of 1893, Athletic Club Sparta came up with its tricolour, in which blue symbolises Europe, red is the symbol of the royal city, and the reasons for the yellow are not known any more. Sporting Clube de Portugal is a famous Portuguese club from Lisbon. Júlio de Araújo, who would later become the president of Sporting and is a keen historian of the founding process of Sporting. Juventus is the most Italian double champions even they have won just two in 1960 and 1995 and is the most UEFA Cup winners and also the most European Cup vice-champions.
